Our bodies' chemical make-up is equally important as our bodies' structural make-up. A properly nourished body will maximize tissue function and allow it to perform at its highest ability. This is essential for your body's regeneration, growth, and disease prevention. Reducing the proper intake of nutrients begins to stress the body and organ tissues and not allow them to function as they should. That is when one may begin having symptoms. Over time nutrient deficiencies create abnormal and diseased tissue. This long term stress to an organ or tissue of the body results in a “medical condition or disease process”. Adding poor eating habits, stress, toxins (air, water, agricultural, industrial to name a few sources), smoking, alcohol, medications (prescribed or over-the-counter), inadequate sleep, excessive caffeine, sugar and wheat all increase our needs for vitamins and minerals due to depletion within our body. This can significantly accelerate health deterioration and aging. How healthy are you?

Probably, it can range from very little, to someone needing considerable change. The amount of change is really based on the individual. To stereotype, the Western diet is fast, convenient, processed, chemically altered, carbohydrate heavy, low protein, and lacks vegetables. Even a diet with only some of these traits can be a recipe for one of the now common health disasters. As a nation, we eat poor-quality foods that have been stripped of nutrients. Americans are overfed and undernourished: lots of calories with little nutrition. Our diets should essentially be the source of all our nutrients. The adage goes “You are what you eat.” is really truth. Is your body made up of synthetic lab derived chemicals and food substitutes?

This is a challenging question. The true answer is, it depends on the person. There are common themes depending on metabolic type and the particular health challenges affecting the individual. There is no one size fits all diet. Generally, we need less sugar, refined grains, processed food, dyes, colors, sweeteners, preservatives and other chemicals. We require more protein, fresh vegetables and fruits, and good fats.

Yes, more research and literature is validating that organic food is by far better than non-organic, conventionally grown food. There are several advantages of organic food over non-organic food.

1. Elimination of pesticides/herbicides/hormones/antibiotic residues (all biologically harmful and TOXIC to humans and animals) on fruit and vegetables or in animal products. Overall organic food is healthier.
2. More vitamin and mineral content in organic produce verses conventional produce. Compare the taste difference between a grocery store tomato and the one grown in your back yard. That difference can be attributed to increased vitamin and mineral content.
3. Much less environmental impact due to better farming practices and no chemical usage in raising animals.
4. Cost of organic food is dropping much closer to conventional, non-organic food. Organic products are becoming substantially more available. Consumer demand and the increase of farms producing organic food have been driving organic farming as the largest growth segment of agriculture for the last several years.

In our modern society, to make up for what we lack in our food, it is necessary to take some basic supplements. (for example multi-vitamin/mineral, omega 3, and calcium)

A typical “complete” multivitamin contains only a fraction of the compounds found in real food. Commonly, the mass produced retail grade vitamins are synthetically derived from labs or other sources and not from food, or the vitamins are isolated parts and miss many of the other nutrients and phytonutrients found in nature. Cost does often reflect the quality and sources of comparable supplements. In addition, the FDA does not regulate the dietary and supplement industry as it does with the pharmaceutical industry. (Not that is an overly bad thing.) But the point is, trust your source. Labeling can be confusing and inaccurate. (see Understanding Supplement Labels article under Nutrition)

Whole food supplements are made of concentrated foods. When processed correctly, they supply a multitude of the plant's components. Foods provide nutrients that work synergistically. They work together to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.

Only whole food ingredients can provide you with all the nutrients contained within the food, not just vitamin isolates derived from non-food sources, for example coal tar is often used to mass produce cheap B vitamins for large commercial manufacturers. When looking at Recommended Daily Allowance (R.D.I) values there is a tendency to think that more is better. However, when choosing supplements, quality is far more important than quantity. A small amount of a vitamin in a whole food form is far more important to the human body than a large dose of an isolated vitamin. This is because the isolated form is just a fraction of the whole and is missing important nutrients that the body needs. Taking more of the isolated form will not make up for these deficiencies and can sometimes create more nutrient deficiencies.

Most importantly, when taking whole food supplements, because they are made from real food, less of the overall nutrient is needed because it is more digestible, more absorbable for the body to take on, and has greater impact on the body.
